My name is Sarah Lamont and I’m mum to 3 year old Joe. Joe was never supposed to live past birth… he has a condition called ARPKD where kidneys are enlarged and cystic. His were so big they had compacted his lungs and didn’t work at all. From birth I was told every day he wouldn’t make it but he did! He had to have both kidneys removed and spent his first year in hospital. The following year I was told he had a liver condition…hepatic fibrosis. He would now need a combined liver and kidney transplant. He is such a great wee boy who just gets on with life. 4 weeks ago, Joe had been ill for a few days..vomiting and diarrhea but this is normal for Joe. On the 12th July I decided to take him to hospital. He got iv fluids and the next morning I went for a shower to come back and he’d totally crashed. He was rushed to icu. I had no idea it was so bad. Because Joe has been so ill in the past, I don’t get phased. I always ask ‘sure he won’t die?’ And as long as the answer is no, I’m ok. Initially I was told he would be OK, but then I was pulled to the side and told to expect the worse It was awful. Then I heard the word septicaemia being said so off I went to Google and asked sure it wasn’t sepsis and they looked at me and said yes. They were putting everything they could into him but his little body was just shutting down. I prayed and pleaded with God to give him a chance and eventually, at midnight his blood pressure started to come up. In the morning he was still here and the consultant pulled me to the side and said they were worried about his leg. They hadn’t been worried the day before as they were sure he wouldn’t be here. To cut a long story short, he nearly lost his leg but…he didn’t. They have told me he’s the worse surviving case of sepsis they’ve ever seen and I think the stuff they pumped into him was pretty high too. It’ll be 4 weeks Tuesday since he was brought in and he came home yesterday. I am so grateful to the staff at the Royal, Belfast for saving Joes life.
