Gifts in Wills FAQs

Why should I make a Will? Open

By making your Will and keeping it up to date you can make sure that your affairs are in order and that your estate is dealt with as you would wish.

If you die without a Will, your estate may not go where you would have wished. Someone else will decide who gets your money, and in what shares.

How do I make a Will? Open

We recommend using a qualified solicitor or a professional Will writer when making or updating your Will. If you have never written a Will, you can request one of our Free Wills that are provided via our partner, Farewill.

There is no expectation to leave a gift in your Will to The UK Sepsis Trust (UKST) when doing this, although if you do choose to, it will be greatly appreciated.

You can update your existing Will by adding a codicil. We strongly recommend you consult with a solicitor before adding a codicil form, to ensure it is legally binding.

What types of gift can I leave? Open

There are 3 different types of gifts you can leave to The UK Sepsis Trust in your Will:

A residuary gift – a gift of a percentage of your estate, once your friends and family member have been provided for and debts have been cleared.

A pecuniary gift – a gift of a fixed sum of money (this can decrease in value over time due to inflation).

A specific gift – a gift of a particular item, such as jewellery or antiques.

What are the benefits of leaving a gift in my Will? Open

Gifts to UK registered charities are exempt from inheritance tax, and may also bring down the total value of your estate below the Inheritance Tax threshold. We strongly recommend that you speak to a solicitor for advice on tax issues.

By leaving a gift in your Will to The UKST, you are allowing our life-saving work to continue. It will also allow your generosity and compassion to live on – thereby potentially saving thousands of lives.

I have left a gift in my Will to The UKST, do I have to tell you? Open

No – your Will is personal, and it is completely up to you whether you share this information with us. If you do tell us, this will be confidential, and you can change your mind at any time.

However, by telling us you plan to leave The UKST a gift in your Will, it allows us to ‘thank you’ and plan for the future.

If you would like to discuss making a gift to The UK Sepsis Trust in your Will, or inform us that you have already done so, please contact a member of our Fundraising Team on 0121 716 5923 or emailing fundraising@sepsistrust.org
