CLINICAL VOLUNTEER
Use your clinical experience and professional networks to help improve sepsis outcomes.
Have you encountered sepsis in your clinical work or been personally affected by it? Would you like to use your professional expertise to raise awareness, strengthen safety culture, and make a lasting impact, all on your own terms?
As a Clinical Volunteer for the UK Sepsis Trust, you’ll raise awareness in the settings that matter to you, your workplace, your university, or your local community, helping to strengthen the culture of early recognition and rapid response.
Please note: This is an awareness-raising role, not a medical training or advisory position. Volunteers do not provide clinical instruction or guidance. Your expertise adds authenticity and credibility to UKST’s awareness work – ensuring accurate, trusted information reaches the people who need it most.

More about this role
Why get involved
Being a Clinical Volunteer isn’t just about helping others – it’s also a chance to grow, connect, and inspire change. In this role, you’ll:
- Strengthen your leadership and communication skills through public speaking and health promotion.
- Enhance your professional profile by collaborating with a nationally recognised patient safety charity.
- Join a supportive network of like-minded clinicians passionate about saving lives.
- Shape local change by improving sepsis awareness within your team, organisation, or community.
- Give back in a meaningful way, using your knowledge and experience to protect others.
What the role involves
After receiving our tailored training, you’ll be ready to start promoting sepsis awareness in your own way.
You can:
- Deliver a short awareness talk using UKST’s ready-made slides and resources.
- Display posters or leaflets in your workplace/ community.
- Share quick reminders or updates during team meetings or handovers.
- Include sepsis awareness in staff training sessions or patient information.
For example:
- A pharmacist might display posters and discuss ‘red flag’ symptoms with patients and colleagues.
- A GP could include sepsis awareness during a practice training day.
- A nurse might run a quick refresher during a ward safety huddle.
From time to time, the UK Sepsis Trust also receives requests from hospitals, universities, and other organisations looking for clinically trained speakers. You may be invited to take part in these opportunities, but participation is entirely optional – we’ll always ask your permission first.
There’s no requirement to deliver talks; you can make just as big an impact by sharing resources, starting conversations, and helping your workplace stay alert to sepsis.
Support you’ll receive
We’ll make sure you feel confident and supported throughout. You’ll receive:
- Tailored online training and guidance designed specifically for clinical professionals.
- A ready-to-use awareness pack including slides, posters, and talking points.
- Ongoing one-to-one support from our Volunteer Lead.
- Opportunities to connect with other volunteers and share ideas.
- Reimbursement for any agreed travel expenses.
We also recognise that sepsis can be an emotionally charged topic. Optional wellbeing check-ins are available if you need them.
Who’s this role for?
This role is open to qualified clinical professionals across all disciplines who have experience of, or a strong interest in, sepsis awareness.
This includes (but isn’t limited to): Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, midwives, paramedics, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physician associates, dentists, healthcare assistants, clinical educators, and allied health professionals.
Proof of professional registration or employment (e.g. GMC, NMC, HCPC, GPhC registration) will be required during onboarding. We verify registrations annually to ensure compliance and credibility.
Time commitment
This is a flexible, occasional role that fits around your professional and personal life.
Some volunteers give one or two talks a year; others integrate sepsis awareness into their everyday work. You decide how and when to get involved.
The difference you’ll make
By becoming a Clinical Volunteer, you’ll help others recognise sepsis earlier, act faster, and save lives. Every conversation, poster, or talk you deliver helps someone spot the signs – and that can change everything.
