Real lives,

real impact

Abbie Kitson’s story is just one example from the hundreds of people we provide free, nurse-led support to each year.

Diagnosed with sepsis aged just 19 after routine surgery for her Crohn’s Disease, Abbie’s life was turned upside down as she faced an extended hospital stay, intense physical recovery, and trauma from her ordeal.

Struggling with the mental after effects of sepsis, she found vital support through UKST’s Support Nurses and online Support & Connect groups, where she connected with others who truly understood her experience.

“All of those really confusing feelings suddenly didn’t feel as isolating as I had a group of people around me that got it and also they could sympathise with the fact that I was going through what they were going through, but at a young age, and so I am really grateful for the UK Sepsis Trust.” – Abbie Kitson

Our support services help people like Abbie feel less alone, offering them a safe space to share, learn and heal. Through our Sepsis Voices campaign, we’re proud to bring together stories of strength and resilience, to bring comfort to others affected by this condition.

See the impact we’ve made in 2024

With your support, we’ve already achieved a lot this year. Your donations will continue funding our vital work in these areas, as well as others:

  • Putting sepsis back on the national agenda: In September 2024 we launched a petition urging the Government to redress sepsis as a public health priority. With over 50,000 signatories, our call to action has resulted in two parliamentary debates, shining a spotlight on the need for improved sepsis care and prevention.
  • Bringing communities together: Our Sepsis Savvy walks in March 2024 united sepsis survivors, the bereaved and our small but dedicated UKST team in locations across the UK. These community events helped reinforce our collective purpose, and helped remember and honour those who have lost their lives to this devastating condition.
  • Delivering life-saving awareness sessions: Throughout 2024 we’ve provided vital Sepsis Savvy awareness sessions to organisations of all sizes, from local community groups to large companies and universities. These free educational sessions equip people with the knowledge they need to recognise sepsis as a medical emergency and seek appropriate intervention, effectively empowering individuals to make life-saving decisions.
  • Educating healthcare professionals: Our e-learning has empowered 74,315 healthcare professionals with the knowledge to identify and respond to sepsis swiftly.
