UKST and NR Medical Training

The UK Sepsis Trust (UKST) has co-authored a new course ‘Essentials of Sepsis Recognition & Escalation for Care and Support Staff’ in collaboration with NR Medical Training.

The face-to-face CQC compliant course aims to equip over 1.5 million paid carers in the UK with the knowledge and skills to spot sepsis early.

The half-day course is not-for-profit, delivered by HCPs, and includes a 10% donation to our charity to help continue our life-saving work.

UKST Founder & Joint CEO, and practising NHS intensive care doctor, Dr Ron Daniels said: “We’re delighted to have had the opportunity to work with NR Medical on this course, a percentage from which will be given back to our charity to help further our vital work to raise awareness about sepsis, and improve patient outcomes. It’s important that care and support staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to be able to identify service users who may be at risk of developing sepsis, and feel empowered to escalate care appropriately.”

NR Medical Training Directors Rachel Holden, a qualified paramedic, and Neil Fossett, an experienced emergency medical technician, spotted a gap in the market for a course that equips care and support staff with life-saving knowledge about sepsis.

Rachel Holden said: “We have seen the devastating effects of sepsis first hand. We noticed a gap in training that was provided to front line ambulance and hospital staff and that which is provided to care and support staff. We are all taught about sepsis, the use of tools to enable us to quantify illness and how to escalate care appropriately. Care staff build fantastic relationships with their service users and thus know them incredibly well. Their instincts are often finely tuned and they’re able to spot when an individual may be unwell or need medical attention. However, we found upon speaking to them that it was difficult to quantify and communicate this to GPs, Nurses and Paramedics. In short, the anecdotes suggested that they felt that they were not taken seriously enough.”

The course is suitable for up to 16 learners at a time, and costs from £21.88 + VAT per learner.

Learners will receive an NR Medical Training/UK Sepsis Trust certificate which is valid for 1 year and a summary of elements covered throughout the course.

The course material includes:
– What is sepsis
– Signs & symptoms
– Capacity & consent
– Obtaining vital signs & what to look out for
– Assessing sepsis risk factors using the National Early Warning Score (NEWS2) system
– Escalating care
