UKST collaborates with Coronation Street on New Year storyline raising awareness of sepsis

5 January 2025

We’re proud to have worked once again with Coronation Street to ensure sepsis is portrayed accurately onscreen, helping to raise awareness of this life-threatening condition.

In the latest storyline, Carla Connor was rushed to hospital after developing sepsis, leading to kidney damage.

Previously on the popular soap, Bethany Platt underwent cosmetic surgery abroad, resulting in complications that led to sepsis and necessitated a permanent stoma

Additionally, Ryan Connor developed sepsis following an acid attack, highlighting the risks of severe infections

Throughout these storylines, UKST has consulted on scripts to help ensure the condition is depicted as true-to-life as the pacing of a fictionalised TV programme allows.

“Accurate representation in popular media is crucial in educating the public about the signs of sepsis and the importance of early recognition and treatment,” says Dr Ron Daniels, UKST’s Chief Medical Officer.

These collaborations aim to bring sepsis into the public eye through a trusted and widely watched programme, potentially saving lives by increasing awareness of this silent killer.

A spokesperson for the programme said: “We have a long standing relationship with the UK Sepsis Trust through our work with them on previous Coronation Street storylines. We are grateful that we were able to call upon them again for their invaluable advice and support with this development of Carla’s storyline.”

If you or a loved one is exhibiting one or more of the signs of sepsis, don’t delay – call 999 or visit A&E. Early action could be the difference between life and death.
