The UK Sepsis Trust applauds Coronation Street for its latest storyline, which sees popular character Bethany Platt develop sepsis following a cosmetic surgery procedure.
The storyline not only raises awareness about the infection risks associated with cosmetic surgeries but also brings visibility to stoma bags, an important aspect of life for many survivors of severe infections.
In the storyline, Bethany undergoes cosmetic surgery, which results in complications leading to a serious infection.
As her condition worsens, she develops sepsis—a life-threatening condition that can arise when the body’s response to infection damages its own tissues and organs.
Dr Ron Daniels, Founder & Joint CEO of the UK Sepsis Trust, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Coronation Street for shining a light on sepsis, a condition that affects more than 245,000 people in the UK every year. Cosmetic surgery, like any procedure, carries risks, and infection is one of them. This storyline is an important reminder for the public to be aware of the potential complications, including sepsis, that can arise from even seemingly routine surgeries. Early recognition of sepsis symptoms, such as rapid breathing, confusion, and extreme shivering, is critical to prevent severe outcomes.”
The storyline sensitively portrays Bethany’s journey, including her need for a stoma bag after life-saving surgery.
Dr Daniels added: “It’s also fantastic to see Coronation Street bring visibility to stoma bags, which are often misunderstood. We commend the work of people like Louise Thompson, who have helped to destigmatise stoma bags and show that they can be part of a fulfilling life. Our hope is that this storyline will help break down barriers and create more understanding and empathy for those who live with stomas, as well as raising further awareness about sepsis.”
The UK Sepsis Trust encourages viewers to take note of the signs of sepsis, which include slurred speech, extreme shivering or muscle pain, passing no urine, breathlessness, and mottled or discoloured skin. Prompt action saves lives, and raising awareness can prevent deterioration in both those undergoing medical procedures and their loved ones.
A spokesperson for Coronation Street said: “Coronation Street is delighted to be working with the UK Sepsis Trust again for Bethany Platt’s upcoming storyline, following the success and support during Ryan Connor’s storyline last year and Jack Webster’s storyline in 2018.
“The support from charities like the UK Sepsis Trust is crucial for Coronation Street to accurately depict real-life situations in its storylines and ensure the proper portrayal of conditions such as sepsis due to the potential impact on the audience.”
