Laing O'Rourke

As one of the largest construction companies in the UK, Laing O’Rourke has over 12,000 employees, making their partnership with the UK Sepsis Trust (UKST) pivotal in increasing public awareness of sepsis.

LAING O’ROURKE STAFF GET #SEPSISSAVVY

In 2021, employees at Laing O’Rourke became increasingly aware of the devastating effects of sepsis through stories of bereaved families and sepsis survivors in the media. Mindful of the potential hazards in their own industry, and looking to ensure their colleagues were fully equipped with the life-saving knowledge of spotting the signs of sepsis, they found their way to UKST, and its Sepsis Savvy initiative.

Spearheaded by Construction Director Tom Higgins, and implemented by the Health & Wellbeing team, key messaging around the signs and effects of sepsis were disseminated across the company’s internal communications, including the staff intranet site, giving rise to a Europe-wide audience. Employees at Laing O’Rourke and external contractors were encouraged to get Sepsis Savvy by engaging with the free interactive tools provided by UKST.

Higgins said: “Laing O’Rourke is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees and contractors. When we discovered how many deaths are caused by sepsis each year, and that many of them could be avoided if people knew the signs to look for, we knew we had a duty to spread the word. Sepsis Savvy is a really easy way for organisations to educate their people and wider communities about sepsis. It’s quick to implement and, crucially, it’s free”.
